Vladimir Nabokov had himself chauffeured through half of America to hunt butterflies. For the Russian bourgeois son, the “dearly loved black 1946 Oldsmobile” was like a splendid carriage that brought him back to the dream worlds of his childhood. At the same time, the car was a real retreat for the writer. He wrote his world success “Lolita” in 1958, mostly on the road: “I often work in the car. I wrote almost the entire Lolita under plane trees on the side of the road,” reports Nabokov.
