Carola Rackete, 35, sits in a Turkish café at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin and orders breakfast. A few years ago she became known throughout Europe: in 2019, Rackete captained a ship with rescued refugees into the port of the Italian island of Lampedusa – after weeks of struggling with the authorities and against the will of the government at the time. Now she is running for the Left in the European elections.
