Carnival in Venice dares to restart this year

It should be a restart to normality, but the corona pandemic will also affect the world-famous Venice Carnival in 2022. The festival in the northern Italian lagoon city, known for its costumes and masks, is hybrid this year. The first events at the traditional event, which runs until March 1st, began at the weekend.

“Remember the future” is the motto of the carnival celebrated for the third time under Corona conditions. Actors, puppeteers and pantomime artists performed their plays in the urban area. In an almost 90-minute show broadcast over the Internet, carnival veterans Prince Maurice and Linda Pani – the angel of 2020 – reported on the first day on Saturday evening.

The organizers equalized the carnival and, according to their own statements, organized a series of pandemic-friendly events on the islands of the lagoon, the mainland and in the old town. The 2G rule applies to concerts, performances in theaters or exhibitions: Anyone who wants to be there on site needs the corona vaccination certificate or proof of recovery.

This year, however, the carnival also wants to be accessible to its international audience. Interested parties can follow some events in the live stream online. The first show on Saturday night with Maurice and Pani was actually only in Italian. In the end, however, the prince promised the audience that more should be spoken in other languages such as English, German or French.
