Jan-Lennard Struff’s journey in Madrid reads like a fairy tale: In the last round of qualifying, the German failed due to Aslan Karatsev, but Struff got a second chance as a lucky loser and used it like no other! The Warsteiner made it to the quarter-finals against fellow favorite Tsitsipas via opponents Sonego, Shelton, Lajovic and Cachin. In a high-class duel, Struff was able to improve again and threw the Greek out of the tournament with a three-set victory (7: 6, 5: 7, 6: 3). In the semifinals there was a reunion with Karatsev and again the German got the upper hand – despite being behind in the set he fought back and is the first lucky loser ever in a final of the second highest category!
