Carla Hinrichs is still convinced that she “did the right thing” when she stuck herself to a Frankfurt street in 2022 and caused a traffic jam. The spokesperson for the last generation appealed against the subsequent court ruling – and now failed.

The spokesperson for the climate group Last Generation, Carla Hinrichs was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of two months in an appeal process at the Frankfurt regional court. “It is up to her whether she has to go to prison again at some point or not,” said presiding judge Jochen Kirschbaum on Wednesday evening after around seven hours of proceedings.

Her appeal was rejected and the original sentence from last year was reinstated. The public prosecutor demanded a fine of 80 daily rates of 10 euros. The verdict is not yet legally binding.

Frankfurt court sentences Carla Hinrichs to two months in prison on probation

The appeal process concerned Hinrich’s conviction from 2023. The 26-year-old is said to have blocked a Frankfurt street in 2022 and stuck herself to it during the protest. The blockade resulted in a major traffic jam. A penalty order of 60 daily rates of 30 euros each was imposed against the activist.

She appealed against this. The district court in Frankfurt am Main finally sentenced her to two months in prison on probation in May last year. After the verdict, the young woman appealed.

Hinrichs described, sometimes in tears, during the hearing on Wednesday that she had grown up climate-conscious. “I am convinced that I did the right thing,” she said, referring to the 2022 blockade.

In retrospect, the last generation spokeswoman would accept a fine

Kirschbaum told the defendant that she might have tripped herself up with the announcements on social media and further blockades. “It’s one thing to walk out of court as a young person and be angry and make spontaneous posts.” It has a different quality to seek media publicity and announce new protests several days after a conviction and ignore verdicts.

Hinrichs stated that he would probably accept the original fine today rather than risk a criminal record. She would consider further blockade actions by the last generations.

In the run-up to the trial on Wednesday, Hinrichs also posted on protest further heating.”
