The Federal Ministry of Transport and the operating company Autoticket have spoken loudly information of Mirror agreed on a settlement in the dispute over claims for damages after the failure of the planned car toll. Accordingly, the federal government must now pay 243 million euros. The matter was waved on Wednesday by the Budget Committee in the Bundestag.
The passenger car toll had been promoted primarily at the instigation of the CSU. The idea behind it was to levy a toll for the use of German autobahns, which should not additionally burden German motorists financially. Under this system, the Autoticket company would initially have asked all motorway users to pay, but would have relieved Germans of the same amount of vehicle tax.
In June 2019, however, the European Court of Justice ruled that such a regulation is not compatible with EU law. As a result, the then Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) canceled the contracts that he had signed half a year earlier in confidence that his toll plans would succeed. Scheuer wanted to make good on a campaign promise with the car toll.
Partial award already in March 2022
In a press release published on Wednesday, the Autoticket company confirmed that they had agreed on the compensation payment of 243 million euros.
“As early as March 2022, the arbitral tribunal used had confirmed in a basic and partial arbitral award that the termination by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport under the then Federal Minister of Transport Scheuer, based on an alleged poor performance, was unjustified and, for lack of an important reason, even abusive the notification.
