Car sharing: remote-controlled cars will be driving in Hamburg in 2022

Car sharing could be one of the mobility solutions of the future. But there is currently a problem in large cities: even a car sharing vehicle needs a parking space at the end of the journey and these are known to be in short supply. The startup Vay and the city of Hamburg will therefore offer a new driver service in 2022, a mixture of taxi and car sharing. The electric car is brought to the customer – remotely controlled – by a driver. Vay calls this a telephony mobility service. At the desired starting point of the journey, the customer takes over and now controls the car to its destination. The highlight here: when you arrive at your destination, you don’t have to worry about the tiresome parking, but hand it back to the Telefahr driver, who controls the vehicle from a distance to the next customer. With the solution, customers can be served nationwide. Because the outer areas of the city are also being integrated into the new car sharing model. For Anjes Tjarks, Hamburg’s Senator for Transport and Mobility, an important argument for the model project: “The electric car sharing fleet opens up areas in the outer city that are not yet fully developed by local public transport, thus offering a convenient, fast alternative to your own Automobile”.
