The Golden Palm of the Cannes Film Festival goes to the horror drama “Titane” by the French Julia Ducournau.
“Titane” tells of a young woman who doesn’t want to be squeezed into any grid. She kills many who stand in her way and finally pretends to be a man to escape the police. It is a fantasy horror film with clear feminist aspects that pillories toxic masculinity and provokes and shocks with its images.
It is only the second time in the history of the festival that a film by a director has been awarded the Palme d’Or. In 1993 “Das Piano” by New Zealander Jane Campion won the festival’s highest award.
This year, two films will be honored with the Grand Jury Prize, the second most important award of the festival: the road movie set on the train Hytti No. 6 of the Finn Juho Kuosmanen as well as the Iranian social criticism A hero by the two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi.
The award for the best director goes to the Frenchman Leos Carax for the musical “Annette” with the music of the band Sparks. The 33-year-old Norwegian Renate Reinsve accepts the award for best actress. She embodies in The Worst Person in the World by Joachim Trier a young woman who is looking for her place in life. Best Actor was Caleb Landry Jones for his performance in Nitram Awarded by Justin Kurzel. In the work, which is based on true events, the American plays a mass murderer.
The jury’s prize was also awarded twice: in equal parts to the German co-production Memoria by the Thai Apichatpong Weerasethakul with Tilda Swinton in the lead role and the Israeli contribution Ha’berech (Ahed’s Knee) by Nadav Lapid. The Japanese drama Drive my car by Ryusuke Hamaguchi was honored with the award for best screenplay. 24 entries competed for the awards.
