The horror film “Titane” received the highest award for best film at the Cannes festival. The French director Julia Ducournau is the second woman to receive the award.
The Palme d’Or in Cannes this year goes to the French film “Titane”. The jury selected the fantasy drama by the Frenchwoman Julia Ducournau as the best film of this year’s competition.
For the second time in the history of the film festival, the Palme d’Or went to a woman – in 1993 Jane Campion received the award for “The Piano”.
Julia Ducournau already took part in the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with her film “Raw”.

Award winner announced too early
Jury President Spike Lee caused some surprise when he announced the winner of the Golden Palm right at the beginning of the gala. He was supposed to be the first to announce the award for the best male performer. This goes to US actor Caleb Landry Jones for his role as a young man with borderline syndrome in the Australian film “Nitram” about the worst massacre in Australian history.
The Norwegian Renate Reinsve was honored as best female actress for her role in “The Worst Person in the World” by Norwegian director Joachim Trier. The two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster from the USA was honored with the Golden Palm of Honor at the beginning of the festival.
This year, 24 films were in competition on the Côte d’Azur, four of which were directed by women. The festival took place under Corona conditions after it had to be canceled last year. Most recently, in 2019, the South Korean director Bong Joon Ho received the Palme d’Or for his film “Parasite”.
