The Cannes program is also impressive in 2024. Francis Ford Coppola and Yorgos Lanthimos present new works.

The Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14th to 25th this year. It’s now the 77th edition of the festival the program is known. Renowned filmmakers like Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”, 50) or the old masters Francis Ford Coppola (85) and David Cronenberg (81) come to the Croisette. Unfortunately, the proportion of female directors has fallen compared to the previous edition. The highlights of the festival at a glance.

“Poor Things” sequel “Kinds of Kindness” and “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa”

Two of today’s biggest stars will appear in new films at Cannes. Anya Taylor-Joy (27), known among other things from the Netflix success “The Queen’s Gambit”, inherits her role predecessor Charlize Theron (48), and plays the main role in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” by George Miller (79). The film will be shown out of competition. Emma Stone (35), who just won an Oscar for Best Actress for “Poor Things,” is taking part in the competition. She was once again in front of the camera for arthouse favorite Yorgos Lanthimos, and plays the lead role in “Kinds of Kindness.”

The aforementioned Francis Ford Coppola is presenting his passion project “Megalopolis” about the reconstruction of a megacity destroyed by a catastrophe in the Cannes competition. “Star Wars” star Adam Driver (40) plays the main role. David Cronenberg’s new film is called “The Shrouds.” Vincent Cassel (57) and the German Hollywood star Diane Kruger (47) play the main roles.

Fewer female directors than in 2023

Last year’s Cannes Film Festival produced two films, Justine Triet’s (45) “Anatomy of a Case” and Jonathan Glazer’s (59) “The Zone of Interest”, which would later win Oscars. “Anatomy of a Case” director Triet also received the Palme d’Or in Cannes. But compared to 2023, the number of female directors taking part in the competition has fallen from seven to four. For example, the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (48) is showing her horror film “The Substance” with Margaret Qualley (29) and Demi Moore (61) in the leading roles in the competition.

German films are not represented in the Cannes competition this year. Veteran star Kevin Costner (69) shows his new western epic “Horizon: An American Saga” out of competition. “Star Wars” creator George Lucas (79) will be awarded the Golden Palm of Honor for his life’s work at the festival’s closing ceremony.
