Candidates for CDU chairmanship: does Röttgen also throw his hat in the ring?

Status: 11/12/2021 7:41 a.m.

The CDU external expert Röttgen wants to comment today on his possible candidacy for the party chairmanship. After the Chancellery Minister Braun announced his application yesterday, it is expected that Röttgen will also throw his hat into the ring.

There is movement in the fight for the successor to CDU boss Armin Laschet. One week after the official start of the application process, foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen wants to comment on a possible candidacy for the office today. It is expected that the 56-year-old will now officially announce this.

It would be Röttgen’s second attempt to get the top position. He had already run for the top post at the federal party congress in January, but was inferior to Laschet.

Braun is running, Merz maybe too

Yesterday, Chancellery Minister Helge Braun announced his application for the party chairmanship. He wants to present the reasons for his application to the state party in Hesse at a state board meeting today. He is officially nominated by his home district association in Giessen. Another possible applicant is the MP Friedrich Merz – for him it would be his third candidacy. The application deadline for candidates is next Wednesday.

First member survey

After the bad performance of the Union in the federal election, the CDU wants to reposition itself. Since last Saturday applicants can be nominated for the party chairmanship. All candidates must be nominated by a party branch such as a district, district or state association.

This is followed by an introductory phase until December 2nd, during which the candidates can present themselves and their program. The first round of the member survey should then take place by December 16 – online and by postal vote. The result of a presumably necessary runoff election should be available by January 14th. The new party leadership is to be elected on January 21 at a party congress in Hanover.
