This is the terrible observation drawn up by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in a report published this Thursday, February 1. The organization says that cases of cancer will increase globally in the years to come. The causes are multiple. What do the IARC forecasts say?
Some 35 million new cases of cancer should be detected in 2050, i.e. 77% more than in 2022says the World Health Organization, which specializes in this disease.

To arrive at these conclusions, the researchers analyzed data communicated by 185 countries in total. Scientists also anticipate a 50% increase in new cases of cancer in 2040, still compared to the figures for 2022: 30 million new cases of cancer would then be diagnosed in that year. In addition, one in five people will develop cancer during their lifetime, according to Dr. Freddie Bray, head of the IARC cancer surveillance unit.
How to explain this increase?
“The rapid increase in the global burden of cancer reflects both population aging and growth, as well as changes in people’s exposure to risk factors,” says the IARC, citing tobacco, alcohol , obesity and air pollution as “key factors in increasing incidence”.

The information shared here by scientists recalls the conclusions that were made in 2022, in the columns of the prestigious scientific journal The Lancet : research thus affirmed that half of the cancers diagnosed worldwide can be attributed to one of the risk factors cited above. We first find the tobacco (33.9% of cancer diagnoses in 2022), and the alcohol (7.4%).
More affected populations?
The IARC therefore considers that 19.96 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2022 throughout the world, although with significant geographical disparities. Indeed, Asia – which is home to half the world’s population – concentrates almost half of the cancer cases recorded that year (9.8 million). Europe and Russia account for a quarter of the cancer cases recorded in 2022 (i.e. 4.5 million diagnoses): a surprisingly high figure. The researchers explain this by “record incidence rates for widespread cancers such as prostate and breast in many European countries”.

Still according to researchers, cancer primarily affects people over the age of 55. More than 75% of the diagnoses that were carried out in 2022 concern this category of population. In the same year, 9.74 million people died of a cancer.
