Canal+ and DAZN join forces, particularly around Ligue 1

Last minute surprise. Before the broadcast of its first Ligue 1 match of the season, PSG-Lorient, this Saturday evening (9 p.m.), Canal+ is launching an alliance with DAZN, commonly nicknamed “the Netflix of sport” since its creation in 2015 and today present in more than 200 territories. It is actually a double agreement between the two audiovisual groups.

First of all, Canal+ is creating its “Canal+ Ligue 1” digital channel this Saturday, modeled on what it already offers for Formula 1, the Top 14 and the Premier League on MyCanal. An OTT channel, with the two L1 matches per day that it broadcasts (on Canal+ Sport 360 on Saturdays at 9 p.m. and on Canal+ Foot on Sundays at 5:05 p.m.) and which DAZN will integrate into its offer to market a coupled subscription (DAZN- Canal + Ligue 1) at 14.99 euros per month and even at 9.99 euros for its launch.

As for Canal+, the DAZN platform (Women’s Champions League, Women’s Liga and Bundesliga, NWSL, combat sports, documentaries) will be integrated into Canal+’s sports offer (alongside the Canal, beIN Sports and Eurosport channels) but also to “Friends and Family” and “Integral” subscriptions.

Good news for the LFP

According to our information, this is a non-exclusive distribution agreement, thus allowing DAZN to negotiate other agreements with telecom operators (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free) or other distributors such as Prime Video, in order to to try to broaden its distribution in France as much as possible.

One month from the launch of the call for tenders for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 rights for 2024-2028 (or even 2029), DAZN is therefore truly launching itself on the French market. Good news for the Professional Football League which sees the arrival of a new actor, already a broadcaster in particular of Serie A in Italy until 2024 and of La Liga in Spain until 2027.
