Canadian Grand Prix | Max Verstappen on pole ahead of Hülkenberg, Alonso 3rd, Pérez and Leclerc out in Q2

Another exciting qualifying but… still the same poleman. Three weeks after the masterpiece of Monaco, the hunt for the time trial of the Grand Prix du Canada, largely disrupted by the rain, generated a lot of surprises. Behind the impeccable Max Verstappen (Red Bull), author of the 25th pole position of his career, Nico Hülkenberg (Haas) pulled off a good shot and will start on the front row. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) did not pass Q2. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) had to settle for 17th place after being hampered by… Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), him again.

Nothing seems to be able to disturb Verstappen. Despite extremely changeable conditions, with the comings and goings of the rain, the Dutchman did everything perfectly. Often the first on the track, always very precise on the trajectory, the leader of the World Cup had the good idea to establish an untouchable time just before a red flag caused by the accident of Oscar Piastri, then the return of a big downpour which will have shortened Q3. In 1’25”858, the double world champion pushed back the surprising Hülkenberg by more than a second (1”244), in the right place at the right time.

Leclerc not listened, Pérez not at the level

Some outsiders are in ambush, starting with Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) third ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The two big absentees from the top of the grid are Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), missed the window for using slick tires in Q2 and 11th after another funny exchange with his low wall, and Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) , just not level and 12th.
Pierre Gasly (Alpine), he will start from even further (17th) since he was hampered in an extremely dangerous way by Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), near the last chicane, when he was about to enter the Top 10. The French team will therefore have to bet on Esteban Ocon, serious and sixth on the grid, to garner new big points.

The Spaniard, he got the eighth time but he should be heavily penalized. The Scuderia, whose pace was more than encouraging in testing, could therefore experience another difficult race…
