Can someone stop Max Verstappen at Spielberg?

Sprint Saturday in video analysis

Stefan Ehlen, our deputy editor-in-chief, is live in Spielberg and is looking for every live stream this weekend on the Formel1.de YouTube channel another place in the evening.

Yesterday he stood close to the entrance, where there were still eager fans who saw that Stefan was there live and took the chance to have a look.

In the Saturday analysis, Stefan and I reviewed the events of the sprint shootout and the sprint race and praised Sergio Perez for showing a sign of life in the duel with Max Verstappen. Nevertheless, the distance to the world champion was again much too big in the end.

It was also about the great performance of Nico Hülkenberg, who was second for a long time and then had to give up a bit. Lando Norris had an unlucky sprint, slipping from third to tenth in one lap and struggling to catch up. Aston Martin’s points, Ferrari’s shared sentiment and much more was also discussed, but of course Dilano Van T’Hoff’s fatal accident at Spa and the reactions of the Formula 1 community were also discussed.

By the way, tonight’s live stream starts at 11 p.m., just so you’ve heard it before!

The best pictures from Saturday

If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a reminder that we made a photo series for you yesterday, too, which captured a few special moments from the sprint Saturday at the Red Bull Ring.

Things can only get better for Gasly

One driver who was hit hard after yesterday’s sprint race was Pierre Gasly.

The Alpine pilot didn’t have a good Saturday, he didn’t put on slicks either, but he was the one who eventually couldn’t cope with the intermediates anymore and was handed down five places in the end.

From the start it was very difficult for Gasly, he had wheelspin and then another mishap in Turn 1: “It was just impossible to steer the car. I don’t know exactly, I had a touch in Turn 1 and after that I had I just have the problem that I’m going straight in every corner and couldn’t steer.”

Gasly starts from ninth place today, has Nico Hülkenberg ahead of him in the Haas and wants to rehabilitate himself for a Saturday to forget.

My colleague Norman Fischer summarized other statements and published an article for you that recounts Gasly’s sprint “nightmare”.

Maturity thing

Of course, strategy will once again play a not inconsiderable role in the Austrian Grand Prix.

When you see the weather forecast like this, it’s interesting to take a look at the tires that the drivers have left.

Interestingly, Pirelli states that a medium-hard-hard two-stop strategy is a very good option, but some drivers just don’t have enough hard tires left for it. Medium-hard-medium would certainly be right for them, or are they trying the one-stop strategy?

Very exciting!

First points for Sophia Flörsch

In between, we can also take a look at Formula 3, because this morning at the Red Bull Ring a German caused a stir.

Alpine Academy member Sophia Flörsch has scored her first points of this Formula 3 season. In the main race she showed a spotless performance, benefited from the incidents ahead of her and secured ninth place and thus two points for herself and her PHM team. She started from 20th place and fought her way through really well.

Congratulations and we would be happy if she can follow up directly in Silverstone next weekend!

Praise for Stroll

Lance Stroll showed a really impressive performance in the sprint race yesterday and kept his teammate Fernando Alonso behind him, also in a direct duel on the track.

After this result, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was very impressed by Lawrence Stroll’s son and practically gave him a hymn of praise in the media round:

“He has to be able to drive a car,” Wolff is certain, adding to the reference that Spielberg is a rather unusual track during the course of the season, which puts the result into perspective: “Even if it’s just an outlier, but that means yes that talent is out there somewhere.”

If you want to read more about the result of the Stroll, the assessment of the Canadian himself and his team boss Mike Krack, please have a look at the article by Christian Nimmervoll.

Weather forecast for the race

It was a bit more changeable yesterday than today in Spielberg at the Red Bull Ring.

The general weather situation is calming down again, Stefan Ehlen gave us the following forecast:

“No rain, up to 25 degrees, but lots of clouds. Wind from the northwest/west, so tailwind out of turn three and headwind on the home stretch. That’s it.”

Bad news for Nico Hulkenberg, for example, who must have been hoping for a bit of rain because it helps his Haas not eat up the tires quite as much. But Charles Leclerc will certainly be happy, who announced his uncertainty with mixed conditions on the track yesterday after the sprint. That could at least provide a little excitement at the start.

Hopefully.
