Can Dündar on the elections in Turkey – Culture

Turkey is the land of surprises. On May 14th last year, around a hundred exiles from Turkey living here met in the garden of the Gorki Theater in Berlin to observe the presidential election. We were all full of hope. Almost all opinion polls pointed to an end to Erdoğan’s 22 years in power. The election result in the evening was a disappointment: Erdoğan had won 49.5 percent in the first round and secured five more years in office. Change in Turkey is a distant future, most of us thought on the way home.
