It was a rather sad work that the London brain researcher John Collinge carried out in 2015. He autopsied the brains of people who had been injected with growth hormones in childhood. From the late 1950s to the 1980s, thousands if not tens of thousands of short people around the world received these hormones, which were obtained from the pituitary glands of deceased people. This practice was only stopped when it became apparent that the hormones could transmit Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). This is a rare, fatal disease also known as the human form of BSE. And when Collinge examined the brains of these people who died young to find possible traces of CJD, he made another worrying discovery. He found the protein deposits that are typical of Alzheimer’s disease.
