Campaign conclusion: “It doesn’t matter who rules”

At what was probably the last election campaign event, Chancellor Merkel and Union candidate Laschet campaigned for votes and warned against their political opponents. For the SPD, Vice Chancellor Scholz tried to convince undecided voters.

Chancellor Angela Merkel once again advertised for Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet in her last appearance before the federal election. “Tomorrow it will be about Germany remaining stable,” said Merkel at a rally with Laschet in his home town of Aachen. “It doesn’t matter who rules Germany.”

As Prime Minister, Laschet not only successfully led North Rhine-Westphalia. He also did a lot for the unification of Europe. His actions are characterized by “building bridges” and taking people with him. Laschet has shown in his entire political life that he stands for solidarity and the CDU, not only theoretically, “but with passion and heart”. In terms of content, she emphasized that Germany was on the way to climate neutrality by 2045.

Laschet warns again of a left alliance

Laschet thanked Merkel for her “16 years of hard work”, but then quickly turned to the political opponent in his speech. Again he warned of a possible coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party. Since SPD presidium member Kevin Kühnert criticized the FDP, one thing is certain: “They don’t want any traffic lights.” The SPD is already planning an alliance with the Left Party, which in turn has “voted no at every step in the EU’s unification”. His conclusion: Those who vote for the SPD get a left-wing alliance, those who want stability have to choose the Union.

He also warned against “ideological experiments” in economic policy in the event of an election victory for the SPD. This means that “everything that we have built up over the past 16 years will be gambled away”.

Scholz is campaigning for a higher minimum wage

Parallel to the event in Aachen, SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz had his last appearance in his constituency in Potsdam. He promoted his party with substantive arguments, such as an education policy that also supports and promotes disadvantaged people. In the event of an election victory, he also promised to address the issue of affordable housing and to work for a stable level of pensions.

One topic is particularly close to his heart, says Scholz, and that is an increase in the minimum wage. “An increase to twelve euros means a raise in wages for ten million people in this country, which is why it is an issue that moves the whole country.”

FDP in Cologne and Düsseldorf

Even the FDP with its party leader Christian Lindner is still campaigning for votes with rallies in Cologne and Düsseldorf. Green top candidate Annalena Baerbock, on the other hand, has not planned any official appointments for today after the official conclusion of the election campaign on Friday. Your Green Party as well as AfD and Left had their official closing events on Friday. However, some of the top candidates are still active in their constituencies.

Exciting election day expected

An exciting election evening is on the horizon for Sunday. In the polls, the SPD was last able to maintain its leadership, but in some cases only very narrowly. Depending on the polling institute, it was 25 to 26 percent – and thus one to four percentage points ahead of the Union. The Greens with their candidate for Chancellor Annalena Baerbock are in third place in the polls.
