The premiere was actually supposed to take place in the “Dark Room”, a tiny studio stage under the roof of the Vienna Volkstheater. But then the interest in “The Rise and Fall of Mr. René Benko” was so great that it was moved to the big house. Benko may be broke, but his story still holds up. The man who was, among other things, “Tyrolean of the Year”, “Man of the Year” and “Strategist of the Year” over the course of his steep career – in every direction – has become a tragic figure. And now also the title character of a play.
