California: Sacramento shooting – at least six dead

At least six people were killed in gunfire in the California capital, Sacramento police said on Sunday. Another ten had to be hospitalized.
At least six people have been shot dead in the city of Sacramento, California. Ten other people were injured, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said. Around 2 a.m. on Sunday night, the police were called because of shots in the city center. The security forces found a crowd and several victims. “It’s a really tragic situation.” They are looking for suspects and asking the public for information. She did not comment on the background of the crime or details.
Police said on Twitter: “We are aware of video posted on social media that appears to show an altercation that preceded the shooting.” We encourage witnesses with similar videos to submit them. A crowd can be seen in the video. Some people seem to get into a violent argument, others seem to want to break them up – then shots can be heard, people seem to flee in panic.
From California to Georgia, gun violence is a problem
Firearm attacks with multiple deaths occur again and again in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive website, around 45,000 people were killed by gun violence nationwide last year. Suicides were also counted. Since the beginning of the year, the website has already recorded 10,700 deaths.
US House Representative Nancy Pelosi said: “Our hearts go out to the victims of this brutal violence and to their families.” She called for stricter gun laws. However, the Democrats would have to rely on Republican votes in the Senate for this. However, many Republicans reject such a move.
The gun lobby is very powerful in the US. US states have their own different strict gun laws. Compared to Europe, however, firearms are much more readily available in the USA overall.
