The aftermath of a winter storm in California. On the Santa Clara River in Valencia, north of Los Angeles, part of the embankment breaks off – and also tears this mobile home with it. Another was to follow. Heavy rain had caused the river to swell. Nearly 85,000 homes and businesses were without power in the LA area as of Saturday. Previously, rain, snow and freezing cold had hit the state – rather unusual for the region even in winter. Some traffic connections, such as the Interstate 5 highway, had to be closed due to the heavy snowfall. Some sections of the freeway in and around Los Angeles were also shut down after flooding. San Francisco also struggled with unusually low temperatures over the weekend.
