California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill for higher taxes on firearms and ammunition. The tax revenue should be used for security measures at public schools and various violence prevention programs. The US federal government has already taxed the sale of firearms and ammunition at 10 to 11 percent. The California law adds another eleven percent.
California is now the only US state that has its own tax on firearms and ammunition, said the activist group Brady for stricter firearms laws. The California Rifle and Pistol Association has announced a lawsuit against the new law.
Around $159 million per year
The law provides exemptions for police officers and businesses with sales of less than $5,000 per quarter. According to state estimates, the law will generate about $159 million in annual tax revenue.
Newsom is currently advocating for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to restrict firearm sales to people over the age of 21. The Democrat also wants the sale of assault rifles to be banned in the constitution. However, these changes are unlikely to occur.
