The 26-year-old sprinter forced to retire after his fall during the 3rd stage of the Great Loop in Pontivy, indeed suffers, according to his Lotto team, from a fractured right clavicle.
A few hundred yards from the finish line on Monday, Ewan snagged Peter Sagan’s bike at high speed and the two riders were knocked to the ground. The Slovak was able to reach the finish, unlike the Australian who suffers from a “complex fracture with displacement”.
The injury from which “we recover the most easily”
“I was told my bone was broken in four places. I was immediately in great pain, I realized very quickly that my Tour de France was over, ”said the sprinter in his team’s press release. But “of all the bones that you can break, I think a broken collarbone is one of those from which you recover the most easily,” tries to put Ewan into perspective.
Stage winner five times during his career on the Tour de France, the sprinter was in good shape and remained on two stage victories at the Tour of Italy in May and as many successes at the Tour of Belgium in early June. His retirement came at the end of a stage marked by numerous crashes, which notably forced the Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain) or the Dutch Robert Gesink (Jumbo) to leave the Tour.
