CAF relocates scheduled matches to Olembé stadium after stampede that left 8 dead in Cameroon

The quarter-final of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), scheduled for Sunday in Yaoundé will be moved to the second stadium in the Cameroonian capital. This decision follows after the deadly stampede on Monday evening in the Olembé stadium, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Tuesday.

A semi-final and the semi-final must be played in the Olembé stadium

“I say that the meeting scheduled for Sunday at the Olembé stadium will not take place, it will be played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium,” said Patrice Motsepe during a press conference. The Olembé stadium was to host the meeting between the winners of the quarter-finals Côte d’Ivoire-Egypt and Morocco-Malawi.

“We need to set up a commission to immediately investigate what happened to find out who was supposed to do what and who didn’t, who didn’t fulfill their obligations. We want their report by Friday,” added Patrice Motsepe the day after the stampede that left eight dead and 38 injured at an entrance to the Olembé stadium on Monday evening, shortly before the round of 16 Cameroon-Comoros (2 -1).
