Anyone who works from home should also be able to claim five euros a day in their tax return this year: the federal cabinet has decided. There are also write-off options for companies.

The federal cabinet has launched further tax breaks for employees and companies to cushion the economic consequences of the corona pandemic. Employees should also be able to claim a home office flat rate of five euros per day in their tax return for this year.

The draft law by Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) also includes a tax exemption for a corona bonus of up to 3,000 euros, which employers can pay to nursing staff.

Machines can be sold better

For companies, there are extended options for offsetting corona-related losses against profits from previous years for tax purposes. In addition, improved depreciation options, for example for machines, should provide investment incentives.

Employers can continue to top up short-time work benefits tax-free until the end of June. For tax consultants, the deadlines for submitting tax returns have been extended.

Most of the measures are part of the coalition agreement between the SPD, Greens and FDP. The approval of the Bundestag and Bundesrat is still pending.
