The federal government wants to quickly provide another relief package for the citizens. In view of rising prices, nobody should be left alone with their problems, said Chancellor Scholz at the start of the cabinet meeting.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to bring about a decision “very quickly” on a third relief package for the drastic price increases. He did not name an exact time at the beginning of the cabinet meeting at Meseberg Castle. There are also no decisions to be expected. According to Scholz, the consultations will continue in the course of this week.

The aim is to get a “relief package that is as tailor-made as possible, as efficient as possible, as targeted as possible”. It should mean that no one is left alone with their problems.

Scholz was pleased with the progress made in efforts to compensate for the declining gas supplies from Russia. Liquid gas terminals have been built on the German coast at an “incredible” pace and the gas storage tanks have already been filled to more than 82 percent. The security of supply situation is “much better” than a few months ago.

“It will be a closed conference where there is a good atmosphere”

In addition to energy supply, the two-day closed government conference will also deal with security policy, professional training and digitization. At the meeting in Brandenburg, it should be ensured “that we as the federal government work closely together,” said Scholz. “It will be a closed conference where there is a good mood and the willingness to work closely together in a serious situation for the good of the country.”

In the past few days, the tone within the coalition had sharpened significantly. From the ranks of the SPD there was recently clear criticism of Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) because of the problems with the controversial gas levy. In return, the Greens attacked Chancellor Scholz.
