Bavaria’s Prime Minister presents his new cabinet – who has to go, who can stay? The names at a glance:
- For science ministers Bernd Sibler comes the previous secretary general Markus Blume.
- The member of the Bundestag assumes his office Stephen Mayer.
- The Member of Parliament Tanja Schorer-Dremel becomes Deputy Secretary General, the previous incumbent Florian HahnMdB, is to become the first international secretary of the CSU.
- The previous district administrator of Deggendorf takes over the office of building minister. Christian Bernreiter and solves with it Kerstin Schreyer away.
- Minister of Social Affairs Carolina Trautner is by the former Environment Minister Ulrike Sharp replaced.
- Sandro Kirchner becomes the new State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and thus solves Gerhard Eck away.
At 1 p.m. Söder wants to present his new ministers to the state parliament and have them officially appointed there. New ministers would then have to be sworn in. Anyone who is already a member of the cabinet does not have to take the oath again.
The designated CSU General Secretary Stephan Mayer will have the task of organizing a successful election campaign. The Bavarian state elections are coming up in autumn 2023 and the polls for the CSU were not exactly positive recently – the values were around 35 to 36 percent and thus still behind the poor result of the 2018 election.
Mayer was Parliamentary State Secretary in Horst Seehofer’s Federal Ministry of the Interior from 2018 until the federal elections last autumn. The 48-year-old lawyer and lawyer is an experienced talk show guest. Mayer has so far sat in the Bundestag as a directly elected member of parliament for the Altötting-Mühldorf constituency. The German Olympic Sports Confederation elected the sports policy spokesman for the Union faction as its vice president, but the new traffic light government prevented him from taking office immediately in January, citing a twelve-month waiting period after he left the ministry. Mayer later resigned from office.
A surprising new face in the cabinet is Sandro Kirchner, who is to replace Gerhard Eck in the new Council of Ministers, the previous State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and current CSU district chairman in Lower Franconia. The graduate engineer also comes from Lower Franconia, specifically from the district of Bad Kissingen. There he was elected second mayor of the market town of Burkardroth in 2008, and in 2013 he entered the state parliament for the first time. There Kirchner made a name for himself as an economic politician.
The 46-year-old has not yet had any expertise in the interior department, but Eck did not have that when he took up his post as Secretary of State for the Interior, Söder explained when presenting the personnel. Eck announced that he no longer wanted to run for the next state parliament, so the change was necessary, said Söder. In football one would probably speak of a position-based change: State Secretary, male and from Lower Franconia under Joachim Herrmann is replaced by State Secretary, male from Lower Franconia. The hopes of Barbara Becker, member of the state parliament from the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen, who was also traded, have been dashed.
