The C&A jeans factory in Mönchengladbach is located on a site with low-rise brick buildings in the historic Monforts Quarter. Jeans are piled on tables in the large, sour-smelling hall. Dozens of seamstresses sit behind machines and attach bags, punch rivets or check the size of trousers. Next door, in a large apparatus, a laser beam travels over bloated trouser legs and leaves behind the so-called stonewashed effect, without any water. In Düsseldorf, at the company headquarters at the airport, the C&A boss welcomes Giny Boer, 61. Before the Dutchwoman came to the clothing company, she was a manager at Ikea. She now leads a company with more than 27,000 employees in 17 countries. In Germany, C&A had sales of 2.2 billion euros in the 2022/2023 financial year and halved its loss to 66 million euros.
