As a child, Leutrim Beqiri was deported from Germany, later he worked at a gas station and was then unemployed. Now he has won the most important music award in the world. How is that possible?
When Leutrim Beqiri drives up to a gas station, he immediately smells the petrol – and remembers the low point of his life, his time as a gas station attendant. For him, the beginning of the shift meant: picking up the pretzels, taking the pretzels to the gas station, draping the pretzels in the display, then cleaning the toilet. Sometimes a few drinkers wanted to buy a bottle of vodka early on, sometimes the car wash broke down. He stood behind the cash register all day long, people came and went in front of the counter. He himself stayed and waited for a life of freedom, that’s how he describes it.
