BVB upheaval: 6 players around Modeste should go, extend Dahoud

65 million savings possible

Borussia Dortmund beckons a major upheaval in the coming summer: Eight contracts are expiring, and it is still unclear how things will continue for at least four of these players. The following year, 13 contracts ended – at best six players from both groups should leave the club at the end of the season, reports “Sport Bild”. If this succeeds, savings of up to 65 million euros can be achieved, according to the magazine. Combined with a fee of well over 100 million euros for midfield star Jude Bellingham (19), sports director Sebastian Kehl would have plenty of room for maneuver to give the squad a different face.

After it had already been indicated in the past few months that full-backs Raphaël Guerreiro (29) and Felix Passlack (24) – he would like to change in winter for match practice – the signs are also set for summer signing Anthony Modeste (34). goodbye again. The veteran came as a short-term replacement for Sébastien Haller (28), who was suffering from testicular cancer, but could hardly convince, also or precisely because he sometimes played in pain.

Among the players whose contracts are expiring are substitute keeper Luca Unbehaun (21), who has little chance of playing time, midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud (27), the veterans Mats Hummels (34) and Marco Reus (33) and youngster Youssoufa Moukoko ( 18). If possible, Dahoud and Moukoko should be extended, with the former the talks will be started promptly. According to the “Sport Bild”, BVB wants to try to reduce Dahoud’s basic salary and integrate more success bonuses into the contract – a practice that is also being discussed at Reus.

These BVB contracts are only valid until 2023

Whether the captain will extend is open in view of highly decorated offers from abroad (Al-Nassr was traded) and general dissatisfaction with the very late offer of talks by BVB management. At Hummels, the signs were clear in December for a one-year extension with an option for another. Reus, Dahoud and Hummels would probably have the greatest savings potential if correspondingly lower-paid offers were accepted. Dortmund would like to invest the money in Moukoko, who can earn significantly more than before. The national player was still hesitating, which is why Kehl gave him an ultimatum – the outcome is still open.

High salaries, hardly any market: what’s next for BVB, Can, Hazard & Schulz?

From the group of players who could switch free of charge in 2024, Nico Schulz (29), Emre Can (29) and Thorgan Hazard (29), each with salaries totaling around 20 million euros, are still the preferred candidates for a departure. However, it is still difficult to find a suitable market for the professionals. Can also recently said: “I’m happy here, it fits in the club and I’m close to my family in Frankfurt, among other things. That fits.” And: “I have a completely different standing abroad, in England for example. I do not know why that is. Maybe people respect my achievements differently or like me better as a footballer type. (…) I know that I haven’t played the best football since I’ve been in Dortmund. But I also had good games, last season was good personally, even though I mostly played in a different position. It wasn’t as bad as it’s often made out to be, I stand by that opinion.”

If Guerreiro, Reus, Modeste, Passlack, Unbehaun, Can, Hazard and Schulz actually go at the end of the season, this would correspond to a total market value of 60.5 million euros – at least according to the current status. If Moukoko decides against an extension, it would come through him alone 30 million euros more.

On the access side, a left and right defender and a defensive midfielder are on the wish list – with Julian Ryerson (25), whose transfer was confirmed after the “Sport Bild” editorial deadline, this position may already be covered. In addition, Ferdi Kadioglu (23) from Fenerbahce was recently discussed in the TM rumor mill. Ramy Bensebaini (27) from Borussia Mönchengladbach has been traded for links for months.
