Borussia Dortmund celebrated a clear victory in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg.
Coach Marco Rose’s team won 6-1 (5-0) on Saturday and celebrated a successful dress rehearsal before the top game at FC Bayern Munich next week.
Dortmund started surprisingly with debutant Tom Alexander Rothe in front of 79,200 spectators. Since Raphael Guerreiro was out and Nico Schulz was only on the bench after an injury break, the 17-year-old started at left-back. The U19 international switched from FC St. Pauli’s youth team to BVB last summer.
The game began with courageous Wolfsburg, who fired the first warning shot through Maximilian Arnold (2nd). It became even more dangerous with Lukas Nmecha’s shot a minute later, which Gregor Kobel scraped off the line in dire need (3′). After this early shock, BVB recovered and balanced the game. Debutant Rothe fired Dortmund’s first shot on goal in the 9th minute when he shot Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix from 15 meters out.
Three BVB goals in four minutes
Dortmund was now getting stronger and determining the game. Julian Brandt (20th) and Marius Wolf (21st) had the next chances to score, but both missed the goal from Wolfsburg. But it was up to the youngster Rothe to put Dortmund in the lead and start a veritable goal festival. After a Brandt corner, the left-back deliberately headed into the far corner (24′). But that’s not all. Within four minutes, BVB scored two more goals. Axel Witsel was served in the penalty area by Erling Haaland and scored from nine meters to make it 2-0 (26′), Manuel Akanji maneuvered a free-kick from Marco Reus from close range to make it 3-0 (28′).
And BVB continued happily. Emre Can scored after going it alone with a low shot from 18 meters to make it 4-0 (35 ‘), also because Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Koen Casteels let the end slip through. Less than three minutes later, Haaland scored the 5-0 (38th) after a Dortmund counterattack on Reus.
Haaland puts together the double pack
Like the first half, the second half started with a Wolfsburg urge. Jonas Wind forced Kobel to make a strong save early on (46′). Several corner balls followed, but they brought no danger. On the other hand, Reus missed the 6-0 (51st) in a duel with Casteels. That came three minutes later through Haaland, who used an assist from Brandt (54th). A little later, Haaland almost scored the next goal, but this time Casteels was on the post (61st).
Only BVB continued to play against demoralized Wolfsburg, who were largely concerned with damage limitation. Substitute Aster Vranckx came close to spoiling the result in the 70th minute when he hit the crossbar from a Wolfsburg corner. With just under ten minutes to go, the visitors got their goal. After a mistake by Marin Pongracic, Felix Nmecha ran alone towards Kobel, who won the duel but had no chance when Ridle Baku followed up (82′).
In the final phase, BVB youngsters Lion Semic and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also made their debuts.

Next Saturday (April 23, 2022/6.30 p.m.) BVB will continue in the top game at Bayern Munich.
