Jonas Hofmann did not make the breakthrough at BVB. His departure from Dortmund was tearful.

Jonas Hofmann from Borussia Mönchengladbach, according to his own statement, suffered from his departure from Borussia Dortmund in the winter of 2016. “It was really tough,” Hofmann said in the Sky– Series “My Story”: “I also have to admit that I sat in the toilet and had to cry. I brought the whole situation very close to me and cried a lot.”

His closest confidants had “built him up again and again and encouraged me,” added the 29-year-old and thanked him for the support: “It was important because it was a tough time.”

Jonas Hofmann made his debut at BVB under Jürgen Klopp

In 2011, Hofmann changed from the youth of TSG Hoffenheim to the second representation of BVB. In December 2012, the winger made his Bundesliga debut under Jürgen Klopp. In the following season he was regularly used under Klopp (26 Bundesliga games, two goals), but under his successor Thomas Tuchel Hofmann only rarely got a chance. After a loan to FSV Mainz 05 in the 2014/15 season, he finally left Dortmund in the winter of 2016.

He made his breakthrough at Gladbach, and Hofmann is one of the few constant rays of hope in the current and crisis-ridden season of the foals. Most recently he was a track player on the right wing even under national coach Hansi Flick in the national team.

His first nomination by Flick’s predecessor Joachim Löw came completely unexpected for Hofmann in autumn 2020. “I was a bit perplexed because it came out of nowhere and I didn’t expect it either,” said Hofmann.
