BVB announces farewell to defender Dan-Axel Zagadou

In 2017, Dan-Axel Zagadou came to Dortmund from Paris – and was supposed to stabilize the BVB defense. In all those years, however, he never made it into a regular player. Now the paths separate.

Dan-Axel Zagadou is leaving Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund after the end of the season. The expiring contract of the 22-year-old Frenchman will not be extended, as the upcoming BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl confirmed to the “Ruhr News” on Thursday. “We had a very frank conversation with each other and came to the decision not to renew his contract,” said Kehl.

Always worried about injuries

Defender Zagadou came from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 but kept struggling with injury problems. In autumn 2020 he tore an outer ligament, in early 2021 a torn muscle fiber, followed by knee surgery the following autumn.

At the beginning of 2022 he suffered another torn muscle fiber, which is why he was not available to the Westphalians until April. Zagadou has played all of the last five league games, but there is now a separation.

In central defense, BVB has strengthened prominently for the coming season with Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg) and Niklas Süle (FC Bayern Munich).
