Speyer, Germany: Decommissioned submarine on farewell voyage. Truck transports 500-ton colossus. U17 was in service for 40 years. Michael Einkorn, site manager of the Technikmuseum Sinsheim: “The submarine is to be transported to Sinsheim next year. Preparations will start next week. We have to remove the batteries so that we can turn the boat to fit under the bridges in Heidelberg.” U17 has been on the road since the end of April. From the Baltic Sea port of Kiel via the North Sea and Rhine to the natural port of Speyer. Now it’s ready for the museum.
A decommissioned submarine of the Bundeswehr has arrived at the natural harbor of Speyer after several weeks of transport via the North Sea and the Rhine. “U17” has to make his last trip to the museum on the street.
On Sunday afternoon, the Technik Museum Speyer received the submarine U17, which had been decommissioned by the German Navy. The almost 50 meter long and 500 ton vehicle was brought at walking pace by truck from the local natural harbor to the exhibition site, as the museum spokeswoman Simone Lingner announced. Accordingly, the steel colossus covered the four-kilometer, partly winding route in around three and a half hours.
Submarine “U17”: From Kiel to Speyer
Around 2,000 onlookers gathered at the edge of the track, the police said. U17 will be on an open-air site in Speyer and can initially be viewed from the outside, as the spokeswoman said. In 2024, the submarine should come to a museum in Sinsheim in Baden-Württemberg. According to the spokeswoman, it can also be examined from the inside there.
Three weeks ago, the class 206A submarine was hoisted onto a floating pontoon in Kiel. From there it went via the Kiel Canal and the North Sea first to Rotterdam and then up the Rhine past Cologne, Mainz and Mannheim to Speyer. U17 had been in service since 1973 before being retired in 2010.
