Bundeswehr in Mali: A vital decision – politics

No other deployment of the Bundeswehr is currently as dangerous as the one in Mali, no other is so much on the brink. What speaks for and against a withdrawal – and what Russia has to do with it.

It wasn’t a good week in Mali again. Four soldiers from the United Nations military mission Minusma, in which the Bundeswehr is also involved, died on October 17 when a concealed booby trap detonated. They belonged to the contingent from Chad and were traveling near Kidal in the north of the country. Days earlier, jihadists in central Mali had attacked a tour bus. Eleven people were killed and 53 injured, some seriously. The West African country does not come to rest. Blood flows again and again.
