Manuel Neuer should soon be back between the posts. This could happen in FC Bayern’s home game against Darmstadt. How have Neuer’s previous comebacks after serious injuries been?

The wait has for Manuel Neuer will soon come to an end. The national goalkeeper could make his comeback in FC Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga home game against SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). It was Neuer’s longest injury break of his career.

How did he return after his previous serious failures at FC Bayern?

130 days break

Neuer broke his left metatarsal in the bitter 4-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the quarter-final second leg of the Champions League on April 18, 2017. Neuer, who had also undergone surgery on his left foot just three weeks earlier, sustained the injury in extra time. Since FC Bayern had already exhausted their substitution quota, the keeper had to play through. Neuer will not return until next season. He even kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 Bundesliga win against Werder Bremen on August 26th.

259 days break

Neuer suffers an early setback. On September 16, 2017, in the 4-0 win against FSV Mainz, he had a wild start to the Oktoberfest, and two days later, in the secret final training session before the Bundesliga away game at FC Schalke 04, he broke his left foot again. The 2017 football year ended early for him. Neuer has to take a break for eight months and will only make his competitive return on June 2, 2018: in the 1-2 World Cup test in Klagenfurt against Austria, he impressed with some great saves.

331 days break

The last time Neuer was in the Munich goal was on November 12, 2022 in a 2-0 away win against FC Schalke. The 37-year-old will play his last competitive game to date in Germany’s early World Cup exit in Qatar on December 1, 2022 against Costa Rica (4:2). After the tournament, he broke his tibia and fibula on his right lower leg during a ski tour. So now the comeback against Darmstadt in the Munich Arena? “We have to wait and talk to Manu,” said coach Thomas Tuchel after the 3-1 win in the Champions League at Galatasaray Istanbul on Tuesday. “He wants to anyway.”
