Bundesliga season start: Gladbach annoys Bayern

Status: 08/13/2021 10:25 p.m.

Borussia Mönchengladbach scored a point against Bayern Munich in the opening game of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season. In the end, Gladbach struggled above all with the video assistant.

In the end, from Gladbach’s point of view, two scenes in particular remained in focus: Bayern Munich’s defender Dayot Upamecano and Gladbach’s striker Marcus Thruam clashed in the penalty area, both times Borussia hoped in vain for a penalty – it remained at 1-1.

Thuram falls twice – no whistle, no intervention

Especially in the 81st minute, a penalty whistle and a red card were due when Upamecano pulled his opponent Thuram by the arm and hit the ankle at full speed – TV pictures suggested it. The whistle from referee Marco Fritz did not take place, however, and the video assistant Christian Dingert did not intervene. “It’s a penalty for me, it pulls it up, it hits it down,” said Gladbach’s captain Lars Stindl at DAZN. Bayern’s Leon Goretzka also agreed: “You couldn’t complain if it was whistled.”

About two minutes later, Thuram fell again in a duel with Upamecano – there were again arguments for a penalty kick, but the scene was less clear than the first. Bayern, who can win their tenth championship in a row this season, almost came to a happy draw in Mönchengladbach in view of this final phase.

Gladbach got off to a better start, Bavaria made up for it

Gladbach also had a much better start in front of 22,925 fans in Borussia Park, which was sold out under Corona conditions. Patrick Herrmann played across to Lars Stindl in the penalty area, who forced Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to defend his foot (6th). A little later, however, Borussia took the lead: Bayern’s Alphonso Davies lost the ball, Gladbach switched quickly, Stefan Lainer, Patrick Herrmann and Lars Stindel played the ball to Alassane Plea, who finished (10th).

On the other side, Robert Lewandwoski failed twice against Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer (14th / 26th), and the goalkeeper was also the winner against Josip Stanisic (37th). But then Bayern came to equalize: Joshua Kimmich brought a corner of Bayern from the right into the penalty area, Lewandowski scored by direct acceptance (42.).

Bayern increased the pressure in the second half and could have decided the game in this phase. The outstanding goalkeeper Sommer saved the Gladbachers from falling behind: Against Davies (58th) and Lewandowski (60th), the goalkeeper secured the 1-1 draw. The Gladbachers also had a chance to score the winning goal: But Thuram did not catch a cross from Lainer correctly in front of Neuer (77th). The rest of the game was shaped by the two controversial penalty scenes.
