Football legend Gerd Müller is dead. The former Bayern goalscorer died at the age of 75. As a player, he became world and European champion and is still the top scorer in the Bundesliga to this day.
German football mourns Gerd Müller. The former world-class goalscorer, hailed as the “bomber of the nation”, is dead. As FC Bayern Munich’s long-standing club announced, Müller died at the age of 75.
Bayern Munich’s President Herbert Hainer wrote: “Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans. Gerd Müller was the greatest striker there has ever been – and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are in deep sadness united with his wife Uschi and his family. Without Gerd Müller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever. “
Müller came to FC Bayern in the summer of 1964 and shaped an era. With the national team he became European champion in 1972 and world champion in 1974, scoring the winning goal in the final in Munich against the Netherlands. After his career, he stayed with the club for a long time as a coach for the youngsters. Müller suffered from Alzheimer’s and had lived in a nursing home for years, where he was professionally cared for.
365 Bundesliga goals – a record to date
Müller had scored an incredible 40 goals in a Bundesliga season in 1971/72. It was only last season that FC Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski set a new record with 41 goals. Müller’s record of 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games is unmatched to this day.
