After captain Jonas Hector, 1. FC Köln lost another veteran at the end of the season. Goalkeeper Timo Horn will not extend his contract, which expires in the summer, after losing his regular place, the club announced.

The new goal of the 29-year-old is not yet known. According to the club, with 21 years at FC, including youth, Horn is a record player ahead of Toni Schumacher and Wolfgang Overath, who each wore the FC jersey for 15 years.

Born in Cologne, he joined the club in 2002 at the age of nine. In 2012 he became a regular goalkeeper in the second division. In total, he played 329 competitive games for Cologne, 201 of them in the Bundesliga. He was promoted twice with the club, relegated once and made it into the European Cup twice. At the 2016 Olympics, he was Germany’s number 1. In the 21/22 season, Horn lost his regular place to Marvin Schwäbe. This season he only made one appearance in the DFB Cup. Captain Jonas Hector, who has played for FC since 2010, announced last weekend that he would retire after this season.

“Leaving FC, as everyone can imagine, is incredibly difficult for me. I’ve been a fan of this club for as long as I can remember,” said Horn: “But my aspiration is to be between the posts week after week and as a goalkeeper to be the backbone of a team. That’s why I decided to take on a new challenge starting in the summer.”
