Bundesliga: Not only referee Zwayer is to blame for the BVB defeat

Instead of referee discussions: BVB should touch their own nose

In the top game against FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund also lost out due to controversial referee decisions. Instead of just complaining about referee Zwayer, Dortmund should question their own performance.

That’s how the game day went

The excitement of the matchdays

The top match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich more than lived up to expectations. After the game, however, the focus was not on the exchange of blows between two top teams, but on referee Felix Zwayer. With three decisions against BVB he let the game tip in favor of Bayern – which not only upset Dortmund coach Marco Rose so much that he had to leave the bank with a yellow-red card, but also carried BVB player Jude Bellingham into the sentence : “You give a referee who was already involved in match-fixing the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?” The England international had alluded to the scandal surrounding ex-referee Robert Hoyzer in 2004, in which the name Zwayer had appeared several times.

BVB club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke verbally jumped to the side of the 18-year-old professional. “His sentence is not wrong, even if he does not have to say it. But that is also due to the emotionality that one has to admit to an 18-year-old. Jude did not offend anyone, he described a fact”, said Watzke to the “kicker”. Oliver Kahn reacted less understandingly to Bellingham’s statement. “That goes a huge step too far, of course,” said the Munich CEO on “Sky 90” on Sunday. Sky expert Dietmar Hamann urged the DFB to investigate with the utmost severity. One could not allow a player to question and attack the “integrity” of the referee. Not surprisingly: The DFB announced investigations against Bellingham on Sunday. “The control committee will examine the statement of the Dortmund player Jude Bellingham for its relevance to sports criminal law,” said Anton Nachreiner, the chairman of the committee.

Match day winner

As if unleashed, SC Freiburg rolled over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday. After 37 minutes it was 6-0 for the Breisgauer – mind you in Gladbach. No wonder that the first foal fans started their way home before the half-time whistle. They didn’t miss a single goal, but it was definitely warmer than the stadium.

Freiburg is now in 4th place in the table and thus on the threshold of the Champions League. Gladbach is now five points behind the Europa League places and has to look down as 13th. And otherwise the 14th Bundesliga matchday brought one or the other surprising result:

Matchday losers

Borussia Dortmund – apart from controversial referee decisions – also has to touch its own nose. In the top game against Bayern in your own stadium, you simply cannot allow yourself the amount of mistakes that Mats Hummels and Co. made. Hummels played the ball in the legs of a Bayern player at the center line and Lewandowski initiated the 1-1 draw. Before the 1: 2, Guerreiro Hummels shot, so that the ball jumped to Coman, who did not miss the chance. And otherwise Dortmund had way too many ball losses to survive against Bayern. So it was not due to Zwayer alone that BVB, instead of conquering the top of the table, is now four points behind the leaders of Bavaria.

You should see these gates (again)

The Bundesliga burned down a veritable fireworks display – at least the attack rows. The defensive, on the other hand, has not necessarily covered itself with glory. Because in the nine games of the 14th matchday a total of 41 goals were scored: eight in Leverkusen alone, six in Gladbach, five each in Dortmund, Augsburg and Hoffenheim. Difficult to pick out a single one. The best thing to do is look at them all again and decide for yourself.

After a collision with Bayern’s Upamecano, BVB striker Julian Brandt slumped unconscious and had to be brought from place on a stretcher after minutes of treatment – again conscious -. “Jule is fine,” said coach Marco Rose on Saturday: “I saw a photo with his thumbs up. And he has already written to the group.” A diagnosis, Rose admitted, “I don’t have”. The association tweeted: “At least the all-clear from the hospital: @JulianBrandt is doing well under the circumstances.”
