It would have been a spectacular transfer – but nothing will come of Jérôme Boateng’s return to FC Bayern. The 2014 soccer world champion can continue to stay fit with the Munich team.

For Jérôme Boateng is not making a spectacular comeback at FC Bayern Munich.

As the German football record champions announced, the club decided not to give the 35-year-old a new contract after a few days of training. Boateng can continue to stay fit at FC Bayern if he wishes. He was said to be in good physical condition.

The decision against signing the 2014 world champion became apparent over the course of the day. Most recently, Boateng, who did not receive a new contract at Olympique Lyon after two years, was without a club. That’s why he could have been signed outside the transfer window. Boateng played at Bayern from 2011 to 2021.

Munich’s calculations were influenced by the health situation of the three central defenders. Matthijs de Ligt is out injured, but the Dutchman should be able to return after the international break. Dayot Upamecano was affected by pubic bone problems before Munich’s Bundesliga home game against SC Freiburg on Sunday (5.30 p.m./DAZN), but they are not serious. The club said he could train again without pain.

Boateng trained with FC Bayern for the first time on Sunday. The defender was also in action on Säbener Straße on the following days. Recently, however, the public focus has been less on the athlete and more on the private citizen Boateng. He is facing a new criminal trial in Bavaria because he is accused of attacking his then partner and mother of his children while on vacation in the summer of 2018.

That’s why the footballer was sentenced in the second instance last year to a fine of 1.2 million euros for bodily harm and insult – but the Bavarian Higher Regional Court recently overturned this judgment and returned the case to the Munich I Regional Court. The case is therefore being reopened . Boateng complained about an unfair trial and a prior conviction.
