On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich meet in the top game of the Bundesliga. For Lothar Matthäus, FCB’s main rival for the title is another team.

Lothar Matthäus considers Bayer Leverkusen to be FC Bayern Munich’s most dangerous competitor in the fight for the championship in the Bundesliga. “For me, Bayer Leverkusen is Bayern’s biggest rival,” wrote the record national player in a column for “Kicker” before the top game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern next Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky).

He also believes Leverkusen can challenge the supremacy of BVB and FCB in Germany. “This is not an annual project. The squad has been put together very well,” said Matthäus.

It’s nice that the top teams in the Bundesliga are so close together, wrote Matthäus. “Unlike in the past, Bayern’s competitors hardly leave any points behind and are brimming with self-confidence. The table reflects this consistency,” wrote Matthäus.

Leverkusen leads the Bundesliga with 25 points after nine match days. FC Bayern is two points behind, Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart each have 21 points. RB Leipzig is in fifth place with 20 points.
