Bundesliga: Leverkusen climbs to third place

Bayer Leverkusen deservedly prevailed in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach and took the next step towards the Champions League.

Bayer Leverkusen won the top game on Saturday evening (01/15/2022) with a narrow margin of 2:1. Robert Andrich scored shortly after the restart (51st) after a corner kick from close range to take the lead. Gladbach’s keeper Yann Sommer had previously fended off a penalty from Patrik Schick. Bayer’s striker Schick scored the second goal for Leverkusen with a head fifteen minutes before the end. Nico Elvedi made it exciting again with his goal (81st) after a rebound.

Kerem Demirbay missed a huge chance to score a third goal from the penalty spot three minutes from time, and he too was denied by Sommer’s strong reaction.

Leverkusen climbed to third place with the win. After the surprising win at the start of the second half of the season at FC Bayern, Borussia suffered a setback and remains in the lower midfield.

Leverkusen can collect the next points in the race for the Champions League qualification next Saturday (3.30 p.m.) on matchday 20 in the home game against FC Augsburg. Mönchengladbach is up against Hannover 96 in the round of 16 of the cup on Wednesday, and then the league continues against Union Berlin on Saturday.
