U23 coach Jan Siewert will initially take over for the Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig. But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Interim coach Jan Siewert could also take over permanently at Bundesliga soccer team FSV Mainz 05. Sports director Christian Heidel said this at a press conference.

“We saw exactly how he approached the team. He is a very important coach at Mainz 05. Anything can happen after that. We haven’t spoken to any other coach,” said Heidel. The 60-year-old later explicitly added again: “Of course Jan is a possible candidate for the coaching position at Mainz 05.”

The previous head coach Bo Svensson announced his departure after almost three years on Thursday. Siewert should now prepare the team for the Bundesliga game on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky) against RB Leipzig. “I used every second. I don’t even know if I slept at all. In fact, anything is possible. Everyone knows what kind of energy we can radiate,” said Siewert. The 41-year-old had already taken over on an interim basis for one game in the 2020/21 season. At that time there was a 2:5 defeat at FC Bayern.

Heidel assured that Mainz had not yet asked for any other coach. “We actually had great hope that we would play a different game in Berlin. We didn’t exchange a single word with any coach or advisor. We had great trust in Bo that we could do it together,” said Heidel. Nobody could turn down the 05ers, “because we haven’t spoken to anyone.”
