“In your own hands”: Siewert Mainz coach until further notice

Two days after taking office, Jan Siewert created a big surprise with Mainz 05. The win over RB Leipzig should also improve his chances.
“He’s a coach for the time being. He hasn’t reduced his chances. It’s in his own hands. He sent out the best application letter,” said sports director Martin Schmidt about the interim coach, who succeeded Bo Svensson, who resigned on Thursday . The 41-year-old Siewert had already taken over a game on an interim basis in the 2020/21 season before Svensson came. At that time there was a 2:5 against FC Bayern.
“I’m totally happy. This victory is for the club, for the players – and above all for Bo Svensson,” said Siewert, who only had one training session with the previously winless bottom of the table before the game against the top team. Regarding his future, he said: “I like to take responsibility, and that’s what I do, it’s logical. At the moment I want to help everyone, help the players, help the staff – that’s my job, and that’s exactly how I do it .”
