BVB central defenders Hummels and Schlotterbeck stood out in Dortmund’s prestigious success in Munich. A Dortmund boss also sees the duo’s introduction as an application to the DFB.

Borussia Dortmund’s winning coup for the outstanding veteran Mats Hummels in the German football classic in Munich should also impress national coach Julian Nagelsmann. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl sees the appearance of his defenders Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck as an application for a place in the German European Championship squad.

“The two of them wanted to make a statement today,” said Kehl after Borussia’s 2-0 win at FC Bayern on Saturday evening. The duo wants to “continue to offer themselves in the next few weeks. And I think that was a really good signal today.”

Terzic: “Outstanding game”

Selection coach Nagelsmann had not nominated Hummels and Schlotterbeck, as well as his teammate Emre Can, for the last international matches against France (2-0) and the Netherlands (2-1). After the two wins, the coach indicated that his squad for the home European Championship would not change significantly compared to the test games. The chances for Hummels and Co. to still be at the home tournament are not that great.

“I think they can only convince with performance that they want to be there again in the summer,” analyzed Kehl. Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said his two central defenders had an “outstanding game”, and he said specifically about Hummels: “Outstanding game from Mats, a perfect grade 1.”

Nomination for the European Championships

Hummels himself said in the Sky interview when asked about a hoped-for nomination for the European Championships that others would have to decide. It will only be clear about the continuation of his career in the summer.

“Nothing has been decided in any direction. I think that will actually only be decided for me after the end of the season,” said the central defender, who became world champion with the DFB team in Brazil in 2014 and has 78 international matches to date.
