Bundesliga: Gladbach sends Hertha to the relegation zone

Status: 03/12/2022 8:22 p.m

Borussia Mönchengladbach wins against Hertha BSC and thus takes a big step towards relegation. The Berliners, on the other hand, slip to a direct relegation zone in the Bundesliga.

A leave of absence from coach Tayfun Korkut by Hertha is therefore more likely after the fifth defeat in a row. The Gladbachers, for whom Alassane Pléa (24th) and Matthias Ginter scored, increased their lead over the relegation place to seven points and are therefore initially out of the woods.

The 2: 3 at VfB Stuttgart, which the Gladbachers had negotiated despite a 2: 0 lead, seemed to have left no traces. Borussia, who had to do without coach Adi Hütter, who was infected with the corona virus, on the sidelines, started offensively and attractively against a team that had lost 4-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt and continued the performance seamlessly.

Hertha could be very satisfied that they were only 1-0 down at the break. The Gladbachers had many good chances. Breel Embolo shot goalkeeper Marcel Lotka in the arms from eleven meters in a central position, a little later on the post. There weren’t even ten minutes played.

Penalty after the intervention of the video assistant

Gladbach needed the intervention of the video assistant for the overdue opening goal, because referee Florian Badstübner had initially overlooked a clear foul by Marc Oliver Kempf on Marcus Thuram. Pléa converted the subsequently imposed penalty to make it 1-0 (24th).

Hertha initially improved significantly

Korkut brought on Suat Serdar for the more defensive Santiago Ascacíbar in the second half and really revived Hertha. A good 33,000 spectators in Borussia-Park now saw an open game and even a chance to equalize with a header from Kempf (54th).

Five minutes later, however, the Gladbachers put an end to the short spook. Ginter, who will leave the club on a free transfer after the season, headed in after a corner kick to make it 2-0.

Cheering at Peintinger

Hertha kept the game open and got a shot into the crossbar through Jurgen Ekkelenkamp (77′), but there was no doubt about Gladbach’s deserved victory.

Assistant coach Christian Peintinger, who stood in for his boss Hütter, was happy about three points and a good performance.

Gladbach on Friday at VfL Bochum

Gladbach will open the 27th matchday on Friday evening (March 18th, 2022) with an away game at VfL Bochum. Hertha has a day longer break and then plays at home against TSG Hoffenheim.
