No win since the turn of the year. Only two wins in the last 20 games. VfL Wolfsburg’s balance sheet reads like that of a relegated team. Coach Kovac is therefore on the brink.

For Niko Kovac is becoming increasingly tight as coach of VfL Wolfsburg. Unlike in recent weeks, managing director Marcel Schäfer avoided making a commitment to the 52-year-old coach after the 3-1 defeat against FC Augsburg.

“After the game you should have the opportunity to discuss the whole thing internally and then see together: How can things continue?” said former VfL professional Schäfer. “If you have such a high number of games that you haven’t won,” then it is understandable, “that I don’t want to have a personnel discussion here shortly after a game. Instead, I would first like to work it out internally and discuss it together.”

Wolfsburg, who started the season as European Cup candidates, are still winless in the Bundesliga this year and have only won two of their last 20 league games. Eight game days before the end of the season, the lead over the relegation place is only six points.

“We don’t need to beat around the bush anymore: we’ve gotten ourselves into this situation that we have to look down,” said Schäfer. “That we need a sense of success as quickly as possible. Otherwise it will be tight.”
