It had become apparent that FC Bayern would loan Alexander Nübel to VfB Stuttgart. Now the contract is signed. The goalkeeper wants to prove himself again in the Bundesliga.

goalkeeper Alexander Nübel is moving from FC Bayern Munich to VfB Stuttgart on a one-season loan basis.

Both Bundesliga clubs announced the long-awaited personnel decision. According to media reports, VfB should not have a purchase option and should pay a rental fee of around one million euros.

“The talks with (sports director) Fabian Wohlgemuth and (trainer) Sebastian Hoeneß were the decisive factor in my decision to join VfB. They brought me closer to the club, the city and the great atmosphere in the stadium with the great support from the fans,” said Nübel, explaining his decision.

Dissatisfied with reserve role

The departure of the former U21 national goalkeeper from FC Bayern had been expected for a long time. The 26-year-old had always emphasized that he did not want to settle for a reserve role behind Manuel Neuer. Even if there is still a question mark behind Neuer’s current form, Nübel should have little prospect of playing many minutes in the FCB jersey. Most recently, the former Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who was brought in in winter, took on the role of number one.

Nübel moved to Munich from FC Schalke 04 on a free transfer in mid-2020. He was never able to assert himself. That’s why he had been loaned to Monaco and was a regular there. “Alexander Nübel has gained valuable match practice in the two seasons at AS Monaco. Because of this good experience, we have decided to go on loan for another year. VfB Stuttgart offers Alex the opportunity to develop further through regular assignments,” said Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen.
