Bundesliga: Cologne humiliates Gladbach in the Rhenish derby

Status: 04/16/2022 8:35 p.m

On Saturday evening (April 16, 2022), 1. FC Köln achieved a clear win in the Rhenish derby of the Bundesliga at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The guests were superior, especially in the first half of the game.

When referee Deniz Aytekin whistled for the break, a ten thousandfold concert of whistles rang out from the ranks of the sold-out Borussia Park. The Mönchengladbach supporters acknowledged the performance of their “colts”, who were already 0:3 behind on the 30th match day. Anthony Modeste had put the guests from the cathedral city in the lead (5th minute). Fifteen minutes later, Florian Kainz followed suit for FC (20′), Dejan Ljubicic put Cologne on the road to victory early in the 34th minute with Cologne’s third goal. Breel Embolo’s goal (85′) came too late for the team from the Lower Rhine. It was Cologne’s third derby success in a row.

Cologne aggressive from the start

Cologne’s big pound in the first half: good pressing, great willingness to tackle and a strong goal rush. Gladbach was overrun and had nothing to oppose coach Steffen Baumgart’s sophisticated Cologne match plan.

Two player changes after the change of sides (Kramer for Neuhaus and Netz for Lainer) by Gladbach coach Adi Hütter brought the hosts at least halfway on par with Cologne. The guests did not get any more goals in the second 45 minutes. Embolo’s goal (85th) was the result of the home side improving their performance towards the end of the game – but the goal definitely came too late for Gladbach.
